Lord of the Rings VR Weeks 05 | Final Pass

For this final pass in VR, I had worked on several different things. Following up from the last post of Week 04, I had worked on some sculpted rocks that didn't make it into the project from the last week. I was able to afterwards work through the UV issues I had, which prevented me from cleaning up the rocks after decimating them and trying to bake them in Substance Painter to later texture. It turned out that when I used the UV Master in Zbrush, Maya and Substance Painter didn't like the UV system from Zbrush. I resolved this by going into Maya and manually remaking all of the UV's for the rocks. Once that was finished, I was then able to make my own rock material and have it implemented by our Tech Artist into the environment. While near the end it was a challenge, I thoroughly enjoyed sculpting the rocks and being able to explore more of Zbrush.

I also worked on a selection of audio for our environment. Based off the books and movies, Sauron can be heard speaking in Black Speech, which is the language of Mordor from which Sauron speaks to his servants called the Nazgûl. We wanted to be able to hear this when picking up the Ring. Jacob, our Tech Artist, had found the audio clip of Sauron speaking through the ring. I was able to go into Adobe Audition and tweak the audio with filters and effects. One of the struggles with the clip, was that there was music in the background. After some research, I found a way to be able to diminish most of the music in the background and some upfront. By using an effect called Center Channel Extractor, I was able to change the vocals to become deeper with more bass and reverb, while on the side channel levels get rid of the background audio. Along with several other effects, I was able to make Sauron's dark and guttural voice become and added a delay to blend/blur some of his speech. Making our player think they are starting to fall under the control of the One Ring.

Lord of the Rings VR Week 04

For this round, I worked on making some rocks/rubble to place around the environment. Unfortunately, there were some technical issues so they didn't get implemented into the VR project just yet.

I took a cube in Maya and used the FX: Shatter to randomly generate different pieces of jagged selections of the cube mesh. Taking the chunks, I brought them into Zbrush and cleaned them up and made High Rez duplicates, and then low. I UV'd the rocks in Zbrush, which I think caused the issue of it not to work well. The Maya and Substance Painter program didn't like it, so I need to fix the UV's now in Maya. I hope to resolve this next week, and complete the progress!

Lord of the Rings VR Week 03

I finished working the the props for the Lord of the Rings VR scene of Weathertop. I went and textured all three; the Morgul Blade, the Sting Blade, and the One Ring. For the Sting Blade, I made an alpha in ZBrush to further detail the sword and later enhance it with texturing. I also added emissive to both the ring and the sword, so that between the texts they both will appear to glow in engine.

Below, I have the floor collision that I worked on with some help. I had to duplicate this collision, while hiding it to prevent it being seen during game play. This helped fix the Nav Mesh I had made last week, and now is properly working in engine. The last images display the hierarchy for the Models I made and Textures.

Lord of the Rings VR Week 02

I continued the work on the props for the Lord of the Rings VR scene in Weathertop. I upped the resolution on both the swords, the Morgul Blade and Sting Sword. Going from the basic shapes to a cleaner pass was my goal for this round. I also helped working on the Nav Mesh in the scene, alongside with the mesh collisions for the main piece.

Here is the new colliders for the improved mesh from our environment artist, alongside with the new Nav Mesh for the scene.
